Preserved animals are just as valuable and important for research purposes as they are for popular science presentations. Vivid objects help visitors of natural history museums to gain an informative and emotional experience. The preserved original, but also models, casts and fossil reconstructions teach us to appreciate the diversity of life, even against the backdrop of dwindling biodiversity.

In preparation for the 56th International Workshop of the VDP (Association of German Taxidermists) in September 2018 at the Museum für Naturkunde Magdeburg, this special exhibition gave an insight into the extensive world of an interesting profession with different specializations.

Based on the material to be processed, it has been divided into three areas: biology, medicine and geosciences. With increasing knowledge in science and an increased demand for high quality exhibits, the foundations for this specialization were laid. The exhibition was rounded off with information on the beginnings, modern preparation and vivid plastinates, some of the award-winning results of the ETC (the European Championships) in Salzburg in spring 2018 and current training opportunities.
