Fungi, a highly interesting group of organisms, show characteristics of both plants and animals. Everyone knows mushrooms. However, what is usually referred to as a mushroom is only the fruiting body used for reproduction. The actual mushroom usually grows hidden from the observer, e.g. in the forest soil or in dead tree trunks, in short the mushroom substrate. Fungi feed on organic matter. They can decompose dead organic biomass and are important networkers in the material cycle of our biosphere.
The special exhibition takes a close look at fungi. It tells of microscopically small species and species several meters in size, of their role in the healing arts or as food refiners, of edible and poisonous and otherwise dangerous representatives that can cause illness or even kill. On display are spectacular mushroom spores enlarged to scale and unique mushroom models in their original size, which look as if they have just been collected thanks to the high level of preparation skills of Lilo and Klaus Wechsler from Bremen. Arranged sections of different habitats convey an authentic picture of the diversity of mushroom species found there.
