Impressions from the animal and plant world

The successful competition “ART & Diversity - Impressions from the animal and plant world” took place for the 7th time in Magdeburg in 2022. Magdeburgs society of natural sciences (Naturwissenschaftlicher Verein zu Magdeburg e.V.) and the Museum of Natural History once again presented works of art from the art genre “Wildlife Art” , this time in the museum's new exhibition rooms.

The exhibition is the result of the art competition for the "Guericke Unicorn", which is organized every two years by the Naturwissenschaftlicher Verein zu Magdeburg e.V. and the Museum für Naturkunde. The prize is awarded to artists who depict wild animals and plants in a realistic way and thus creatively realize the theme "Biodiversity of our Earth". With the exhibition, the museum aims to preserve and promote the tradition of nature-realistic animal depiction and give this art form its own forum.

The Guericke Unicorn

The “Guericke Unicorn”, a 17 cm high bronze sculpture, commemorates the report handed down by Otto von GUERICKE in 1672 on the Quedlinburg unicorn find - one of the earliest scientific interpretations of fossil bone finds. With this exhibition, the museum aims to promote the tradition of naturalistic depictions of animals and plants and to give this art form its own forum.

The exhibition

In January, the jury selected a total of 32 artists from the pool of applicants, who participated with up to 5 works of art. The exhibition comprised 130 paintings, sculptures and sculptures. Artists from Germany and Europe were invited. Among the participants, Dick van Heerde from the Netherlands was represented for the second time with his impressive large-format African landscapes. The 2020 jury prizewinner Tamara Pokorny also once again showed her captivating small scratchboard works. Matteo Germano was represented from Italy. His works stand out due to their hyper-realistic painting style.

Artists from Magdeburg were also represented in the exhibition. Ute Bartels presented silk painting at the highest level. Gabriele Krüger had submitted a series on the theme of transience in the form of old tree trunks. Frank Meier dived back into the depths of the sea with his fish portraits.  The well-known nature painter Eugen Kisselmann was represented from Saxony-Anhalt. His works always achieve high scores in the public vote. His latest animal portraits could be admired at the Magdeburg exhibition.
