Museum history

It is the oldest museum in the state capital Magdeburg still in existence today. Until 1945, it was housed in the building at Domplatz 5. Today, the Museum of Natural History is located together with the Museum of Cultural History in the two-part building on Otto-von-Guericke-Strasse.

The origins of the museum go back to the Natural History Society of Magdeburg, which was founded in 1869. The natural science collections were first presented to the public in 1875 in the rooms of the Realgymnasium (secondary school) on Brandenburger Strasse. In 1893, the Society’s natural science museum moved into the building at Domplatz 5 and in 1904, the Society donated it to the city. After the art and cultural history collections had moved into the newly built Kaiser Friedrich Museum, the museum building was completely available for natural history from 1906. From 1905-1935 it was called the “Museum of Natural and Local History”. In 1936 it was renamed the “Museum of Natural History and Prehistory”.

New beginnings on Otto-von-Guericke-Strasse

The two-part building on Otto-von-Guericke-Strasse houses the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Cultural History.

During the bombing raids at the end of the Second World War, the museum building on Domplatz was destroyed, along with all parts of the collection that had not been evacuated (including all large objects, mounted skeletons and furniture). Further losses occurred at the storage locations due to looting and fires. The remaining collection items were brought to the museum building on Otto-von-Guericke-Strasse starting in March 1945 and the reconstruction of the collections and exhibitions began. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Natural History Museum was re-established from the Natural History Department in 1991. All projects started after 1945 to re-locate the natural history museum in a separate building failed; hence, in 2006, the practical implementation of the concept of a two-part building with a museum for natural history and a cultural history museum at this location began. With the completion of the new permanent exhibition space in April 2015, the Museum of Natural History now presents itself to visitors in a modern and interactive exhibition covering more than 1000 square metres.

One of the largest collections in Saxony-Anhalt

Today, the museum’s collection has grown again to more than 380,000 objects and covers the fields of geology, mineralogy, palaeontology, botany and zoology. The collection focuses on what is now the state of Saxony-Anhalt, with occasional forays into other climatic regions of the world that were significant for our area in geological time.
